abstract = "Water surface temperatures are among the most important
information in the modeling of surface-atmosphere interaction.
Studies generally are focused on sea-surface temperature (SST),
but extensions to freshwater bodies can be important. In this
paper, satellite images from NOAA/AVHRR were used to calculate
lake surface water temperatures (LSWT), based on a nonlinear sea
surface temperature (NLSST) algorithm generally applied to open
ocean conditions. As the first potential application in Brazil,
LSWT monthly means of surface temperature maps were generated for
Lagoa dos Patos in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, covering the
period from august/2007 to july/2008 and for daytime and
nighttime. The bias of the algorithm is reported to be around
1-1,5°C when compared with in-situ measurements. Results show
strong monthly variations in surface temperature during the
one-year period and revel the interaction with the adjacent ocean
in the estuarine region. The ranges of temperature variation found
were 9,9 to 29,5ºC in daytime and 9,9 to 27,8ºC in nighttime. This
gives new insights and leads to possibilities for modeling local
scale phenomena causing temperature oscillations. Being a
feasibility study, future developments include in-situ
measurements in the lake to determination and validation of a set
of coefficients derived from lake conditions. The datasets
validated allow further application for LSWT climatology and
assimilation into numerical weather prediction models.",
